Blockchain has been proved to have the ability to contribute to improving the situation of the pandemic that the world is suffering from today. While almost all the countries are suffering the consequences of the pandemic due to the gaps in their healthcare systems, blockchain might be able to solve many of their problems. These are 4 ways blockchain can help in the prevention of future pandemic.

1- Data management

The COVID-19 pandemic has led to the production of huge amounts of medical data. Due to this, we are in need of storing, managing and securing these data in the right way. Blockchain can be a good solution to manage medical records, preserve their integrity, and also manage real-time data. This trusted process is helpful for scientists who handle the data analysis phase. Collection of data can be made automatically due to Blockchain, preserving the privacy of patient due to the storage of information in trusted and protected spaces, against unauthorized access. This kind of data includes information about the patient such as their name, treatment, and the progress they made so far. The data could be available for specialized medical staff to help in treating, diagnosing, and researching in order to discover new vaccines.

2- Surveillance of healthcare

What the healthcare system needs, is a decentralized surveillance system to make it independent from central authorities, and blockchain can provide that. A decentralized surveillance system means an easier process of releasing and sharing data. This allows national and local agencies to access the surveillance data and add to the surveillance data ledger. Entities who will have access include testing centers, healthcare officials, doctors, and government agencies, serving as nodes on the system. Whenever the system is faced with an outbreak, it could send warnings to these people or nodes, which helps to release and implementing prevention strategies.

3- Spreading awareness

Spreading awareness is very important when it comes to the pandemic. But how can blockchain do that? The data published in blockchain ledgers are extremely secured as the ledgers are absolute and are only modifiable by entities who created them or given their permission. This means that sensitive data are secured. Changes made can be tracked down to their origin. The data can be available not only to the healthcare system but also to the public helping the government implement preventive measures and spread awareness.

4- Tracking infections

Now that the medical data surveillance has increased the transparency between different departments, a better and more accurate reporting will result. Furthermore, an improved reporting has the ability to lead to a faster and improved processing of health data, enabling scientists and doctors to track the number of infections in a given area, or globally, before the virus turns into an epidemic.

The origins of the virus can be tracked using the blockchain technology. Scientists will be able to review the patients’ data (symptoms, recovery, etc.) and monitor them in real-time. This can help control the situation and analyze it better.
