Goals are an endpoint you’d like to reach. Putting goals help you stay motivated to keep up with your activity. Fitness goals are essential, and useful so you can reach your beach body, or lose the weight you want to lose. However, it is not enough to set goals, as it is important to make sure that your goals are realistic and achievable. In this article, we will discuss 5 ways to set realistic fitness goals that you can achieve.

1- Focus on one goal at a time

The most common mistake people make is trying to achieve too many things at the same time. Doing too much at once can make you susceptible to fail to reach your goal. Break your biggest goal into small goals. For example, if you wish to lose weight and become healthy by doing physical activity, your small goals can consist of; going to the gym, cutting your sugar intake, sleep better, etc. Start with the goals that are easiest to achieve, as they will motivate you to achieve the other small goals.

2- Make your own goals

When you open social media platforms, you might see that lots of people have some nice bodies that you wish you had. You could think of their bodies as your goal, however, this is not the right way of thinking. Each body has its own needs to grow and reach a certain milestone. Also, your body might look the same as the person’s body you saw on Instagram, even if you follow their routine. Make sure you understand your body well and how every activity or restriction you make will affect it.

3- Your goals should be measurable, specific, and time-bound

The only way to track progress is to make your goals measurable, specific, and time-bound. Turn “I want to become stronger” into “I would like to be able to do 100 pushups in one training session in three months from now”. This will help you know when you are getting closer to your goal, and what you need to do more to be able to achieve it before the end of three months. This method is known as the SMART method and is used to make goals reachable and achievable in an effective way.

4- Do not have unreachable expectations

At least at the beginning of your journey, you need to have some easy goals that you know you will achieve. This prevents you from giving up, in case you do not reach your goal. Achievable goals mean that there is a very high chance of attainability which boosts your confidence and motivates you to go on with your journey so you can reach your final goal.

5- Understand what’s driving your goal

Many times you need to ask yourself: “why I want to lose weight?” or “what makes me want to get 6 packs?” Some of the drivers of fitness goals could be body image issues, fears, or insecurities. In such cases, it is important to focus on fixing the issue rather than let it drive you towards some goals that might be as beneficial for you as you think it is.
