6 tips to eat with no waste during quarantine
Quarantine could be hard on so many levels, and while we are forced to stay inside, there are many things we are forced to do by ourselves. Cooking is one of them. However, quarantine is a good opportunity to rethink not only the recipes you choose but also the way you cook them. This article is not about healthy ways to cook but about how to cook with almost 0 waste during quarantine. The following are 6 tips you will need:
1- Cook simple dishes
Simple dishes need simple ingredients that are sometimes the most used ingredients in your kitchen. In case you do not use all the quantity you have of a specific ingredient, you can use it in other recipes. Also, if you have ingredients in your kitchen that are close to expiring, make a simple dish out of them. This way, you will always have a way to get rid of an ingredient other than throwing it away.
2- Plan your meals
Even in quarantine, it is important to plan for your meals and maybe the meals of the week. Planning helps you know what ingredients you need and how much of them you need. By planning ahead you can prepare meals with the same ingredients and minimize waste as much as possible.
3- Plan your shopping
Just like planning your meals is important to use the ingredients you have in your house, planning for food shopping is also essential. Firstly, since going to the supermarket does not happen as frequently as before, you need to know exactly what you need. Second, planning is done by knowing what you already have in your kitchen, therefore, you won’t be buying foods that will go to waste.
4- Compost
Compost is a good way of using unwanted leftovers or food remains. Put all the organic remains aside to be used as compost. Find a good DIY recipe online or consult with a professional to know how to do a compost that you can be useful around the house.
5- Organize
Organizing your fridge and pantry is a good way to stay updated on what you have in them and what needs to be used now. Clean your fridge regularly to avoid spoiling your food due to dirt and residues. You can do that after grocery shopping; put the older items in the front and the newer ones in the back so you can know what should be used sooner.
6- Learn to read labels
Not every product’s expiry date indicates the actual day when the product should be tossed in the garbage. Some products have the label ‘best before’ which means that after this date, the product will lose its freshness and maybe its taste. Therefore, before you throw away an item just because its ‘best before’ date has passed, open it and make sure that it looks and smells ok. If it does, it means that it is still good to consume.
