Here is how to take care of your mental health during the pandemic
The coronavirus pandemic puts a lot of pressure on us. From being quarantined and feeling trapped inside, to fearing the virus, stress is the biggest outcome of this period. Furthermore, accumulated stress affects our personal health in a lot of ways, leading to anxiety and other disorders. So how do you take care of your mental health during the pandemic? This article has some answers.
1- Do not obsess over the news
It is important to stay updated during this period and know about the latest safety precautions to slow or stop the spread of the virus. However, with a lot of misinformation being circulated, it is important to stick to trustworthy sources. Also, limit your exposure to news about the issue as much as possible because they have the ability to enforce your anxiety. You can also ask one of your friends, whom you trust, to update you about the issue.
2- Focus on what you can control
There are many things that we cannot control during this time. Therefore, focusing on these things can make us feel anxious and drained all the time. Every time you find yourself focusing on such matters, shift your focus elsewhere, to things you can actually control. While you cannot control any aspect of the pandemic, you are able to control your exposure to it. Take all the measures needed to stay safe such as staying at home and washing your hands.
3- Stay connected to the people you love
To avoid being infected, governments have taken important measure including social distancing and measures forcing people to have minimal contact with them. While this is crucial right now, it can also mess with our mental health. But with the technology offered to us today, being connected can have a different meaning. Try your best to schedule a video call with your friends and family or even a simple phone call, to remember that they are here for you and going through the same situation. However, make sure that you are using social media and online tools with limits. Being exposed too much to these social networks can increase your anxiety. You can schedule calls with your friends right before an online class or work meeting so you do not find yourself scrolling on Instagram for hours.
4- Take care of yourself
Other than making sure you are safe from catching the virus, you can take care of your body and mind in different ways. Start by sleeping well and enough and eating the right food, avoiding binging. Also, be kind to yourself and remember that a lot of people share your feelings at this moment. Also, following a routine can be helpful to make you feel that everything is normal. Practice some activities you like, and go outside to get fresh air or do some physical activities if possible.
5- Help others
As we said before, many people could be sharing your feelings. You’re not the only person feeling anxious and tired during this time. Helping people in need, whether emotional or physical needs, can be good for you. So how can you help others during this time? Start by donating food to food banks, and money, if you can, to crowdfunding campaigns aiming at helping poor people. You can also reach out to people in need or alone, such as a neighbor whose kids live far away.
