Being in quarantine is hard on many levels. Being forced to stop practicing your routines can affect many parts of your life, especially your fitness and eating habits. While it is essential to stay in quarantine to protect ourselves and others, it should not be a break from our normal life and do whatever boredom implies on us. Therefore, if you are worried about your eating habits, the following article has 5 tips that will teach you how to eat well.

1- Admit that your diet won’t be perfect during quarantine

If you have been following a specific diet before the Covid19 pandemic, it could be hard to stick to it during this time. Try to let go of the idea of having a perfect plan to avoid messing up your mental state. Assess your abilities, and do what you can based on that. Always make sure that you are nourishing your body.

2- Challenge yourself to use the ingredients you already have

During the lockdown, it could be hard to buy groceries and go to the supermarket. Therefore, look at the ingredients you have, and try to come up with the healthiest recipe. Consult with your parent or a friend who cooks and ask them about what they would make with a certain ingredient. You’ll be surprised at how many things you can do with so many different foods.

3- Know what to do when boredom or stress hits you

Most people resolve to eat when they are bored or stressed. And given that quarantine is all about stress and boredom, you need to have good options that can substitute eating. You can do many things when you feel the urge to eat out of stress or boredom. You can pray or meditate for a few minutes, do a short exercise, go outside (on the balcony or in your garden), write down your thoughts, create something artisanal, etc.

4- Plan your meals

Even though now you have plenty of time to cook every day, meal planning can be a helpful habit that will keep you in control of what you are eating, and will ensure that you use the ingredients you have stocked in your pantry. Some tips to help you with meal planning: start cooking with the food that will spoil soon, ask yourself how many meals you will consume per day, and identify for how many days you will be planning, use a protein source, starch and vegetables in every meal.

5- Make food safety your priority

Make sure that the food you have in your house is safe, you do not want to get food poisoning and be forced to go to the hospital in this pandemic situation. Follow these basic food safety rules:

  • Make sure that you thaw frozen meat in the fridge or using cold water running and not by leaving it on the counter
  • Avoid consuming any expired food, always check the labels
  • Put the leftovers in the fridge quickly and for not more than 3 to 4 days
